TL;DR

  • Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November. Thanksgiving is fixed to the fourth Thursday of November, so the date moves every year.
  • The name came from Philadelphia police in the early 1960s, describing the traffic chaos the day after Thanksgiving. It was never an accounting term about shops going into the black.
  • It only became visible in the Netherlands around 2015, pushed by online retailers with American parent companies.
  • Thirty to fifty percent off is normal across streetwear and menswear in this period. Whether a particular price is genuinely reduced is a separate question, and worth checking.
  • The season runs from Singles Day on 11 November to Sinterklaas on 5 December. Black Friday sits in the middle of it, not at the start.
  • Buy the plain heavy pieces you already wear, and check what is on the sale page before anything else. A 250gsm tee and a 440gsm sweater survive a winter of washing; the loud one you bought because it was forty percent off does not.

Black Friday is the Friday after American Thanksgiving, which in 2026 falls on 27 November. It began as a police nickname for traffic chaos in Philadelphia, not as an accounting term. Today it is the largest discount window of the year in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, and the discounts are usually real.

You already know the week is coming. Your inbox knows it too. Somewhere between the first of November and the end of the month, every brand you have ever bought from will remember your name.

This is not another Black Friday countdown. It is an explanation of where the day actually came from, what the discounts are worth, and how to walk out of it with clothes you still reach for in March. If you want to go straight to what we have marked down, that lives on the sale page.

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is the Friday directly after Thanksgiving in the United States. Thanksgiving is fixed to the fourth Thursday of November, so the date moves every year. In 2026 Thanksgiving is 26 November, which puts Black Friday on Friday 27 November 2026.

For decades it was one day. It is now closer to a season. Most European brands open their Black Friday sale on the Monday of that week, keep going through the weekend, and close on Cyber Monday. Some run the whole of November and call it Black November, which stretches the word Friday further than it was ever meant to go.

Where does the name Black Friday come from?

Not from accounting. That is the story most people repeat, and it is a later invention.

The name was coined by police officers in Philadelphia in the early 1960s. The day after Thanksgiving brought suburban shoppers and football crowds into the city centre at the same time, and the result was jammed streets, no parking and long shifts nobody wanted. They called it Black Friday because it was miserable to work. The linguist Bonnie Taylor-Blake dug the earliest printed uses out of the archives, and the retailers of the day hated the name. They tried to rebrand it Big Friday. It did not stick.

The version you have heard, that shops move from red ink to black ink on that day, arrived in the 1980s. It was a public relations repair job on a name that had already spread too far to kill. It worked so well that it is now the explanation most people give.

The name started with traffic jams, not with profit.

There is something useful in that. The biggest shopping day in the calendar is named after a traffic jam, and the flattering explanation was reverse-engineered afterwards. Keep that in mind when you read the copy in your inbox in November.

How Black Friday reached the Netherlands

It is younger here than most people assume. Black Friday only became visible in the Netherlands around 2015, pushed by online retailers with American parent companies and by electronics chains looking for a reason to discount before Sinterklaas.

That timing is the whole reason it works here. The Dutch calendar already had a gift-buying deadline on 5 December. Black Friday landed three weeks before it, and turned out to be exactly where people wanted to buy. Belgium followed the same pattern. Germany runs it just as hard, usually under the same English name.

So the day arrived as an import and stayed as a convenience. That is a more honest description than the one on most banners.

When is Black Friday 2026, and what comes around it?

Four dates matter this year, and they sit inside six weeks:

  • Wednesday 11 November 2026 – Singles Day, the opening bell of the season
  • Friday 27 November 2026 – Black Friday
  • Monday 30 November 2026 – Cyber Monday
  • Saturday 5 December 2026 – Sinterklaas, pakjesavond

Four dates, one stretch of six weeks.

If you are buying for someone else, work backwards from 5 December and not from 27 November. Delivery slows down in that window at every carrier, ours included. Our normal shipping times are next business day in the Netherlands, but during sale weeks processing takes longer, and that is worth a day or two of margin.

Are Black Friday discounts real?

Mostly, yes. This is the one week of the year where clothing brands genuinely cut prices hard, because the volume makes up for the margin and because everyone else is doing it. Thirty to fifty percent off is normal across streetwear and menswear in this period. Some brands go further on end-of-season stock. If you have been waiting on something, this is a rational moment to buy it.

The caveat is the reference price. A discount only means something if the crossed-out number was ever real. Since 2023, EU rules require a seller announcing a price reduction to show the lowest price charged in the previous thirty days, and the Dutch regulator ACM enforces it here. So the test is simple: was this item at that price in October, or did it move up in early November?

Two more things worth checking before you buy anything in this week:

  • Return window. Ours is 14 days from delivery, unworn and with tags attached, which you can read in full on our returns page. Some brands shorten it during sales. That is legal and it is also a tell.
  • Stock behaviour. A brand that has your size in every colour on 27 November was not caught out by demand. It planned this.

How Last Bucks does Black Friday

We take part. There is no point pretending otherwise, and a brand called The Unregulated Apparel would look ridiculous inventing a rule about it.

What we do not do is manufacture the pressure. No countdown clock that resets when you reload the page. No stock counter that has said “only 3 left” since August. No price that climbs in the first week of November so it can fall in the fourth. What is discounted sits on the sale page, and what is new sits on the new arrivals page, and both are true in July as well.

If you want to know before everyone else, the newsletter is the only place we send it early. There is a sign-up at the bottom of every page and it takes ten seconds.

What to buy in a Black Friday sale, and what to skip

The honest filter is one question, and it works on every Black Friday deal you will see: would you have bought this at full price in September?

If yes, buy it. That is what the week is for. If the answer is that it is only interesting because it is cheap, you are about to add another item to the pile of clothes you own and do not wear. Everybody has that pile. Nobody built it on purpose.

Three rules that survive contact with reality:

  • Buy the boring thing first. The plain heavyweight tee in the colour you already wear will outlast the loud one you bought because it was forty percent off.
  • Check the weight, not the price. A 250gsm tee and a 150gsm tee look identical in a photograph and feel nothing alike after ten washes. Every one of our tees is 250gsm cotton, and our sweaters and zip hoodies are 440gsm.
  • Size before you buy, not after. Return shipping is at your own cost, here and almost everywhere. Two minutes with the size guide on the product page saves that.

Three Last Bucks pieces worth putting on your list

Not a top ten. Three, with a reason for each, and all three sit in the Black Friday selection.

The Capital Tee in Jet Black. Unregulated Since 2025 across the back, small logo on the chest. It is the piece the brand is built around and the one most people start with. 250gsm, regular to semi-oversized, and it works under everything.

The Sinner & Saint Sweater in Off-White. The Oscar Wilde line about every saint having a past and every sinner having a future, printed on 440gsm cotton with a ribbed collar. It is the warmest thing we make that you can still wear to dinner.

The Capital Zip Hoodie in Jet Black. Same print as the tee, four times the weight, cut oversized with a dropped shoulder. This is the layer that goes over the tee from November onwards, which makes late November a sensible time to own one.

If none of those land, the full shop is there, and so is the story behind every print on our about page. The prints are not decoration. Each one has a reason, and we wrote them all down.

What happens after Black Friday

The season does not stop on the 27th. Cyber Monday follows on 30 November and behaves differently, because it started as an online-only day and still rewards people who wait. Before all of it, Singles Day on 11 November opens the window. After it, Sinterklaas turns the whole thing from buying for yourself into buying for someone else.

Four dates, six weeks, one stretch of the year where the prices actually move. Black Friday is the loudest of them, not automatically the best one. Use it deliberately and you end up with three things you wear constantly. Use it reactively and you end up with nine you do not.

Frequently asked questions

When is Black Friday 2026?

Friday 27 November 2026. It always falls on the day after American Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday of November.

Why is it called Black Friday?

Police in Philadelphia used the name in the early 1960s for the traffic chaos on the day after Thanksgiving. The explanation about shops moving into the black financially came later, in the 1980s, as a way to make the name sound better.

Are Black Friday discounts on clothing genuine?

Usually. It is the single largest discount window of the year and reductions of thirty to fifty percent are common in menswear. EU rules require sellers to show the lowest price of the previous thirty days as the reference, so you can check whether the crossed-out number was real.

Does Last Bucks take part in Black Friday?

Yes. Everything we have reduced is on the sale page, and the newsletter gets it first. We do not run countdown clocks or fake stock counters.

When should I order to have it delivered before Sinterklaas?

Order well before 5 December. Carriers slow down across the whole sale season, so give yourself a few days of margin rather than ordering on the 3rd.

What is the difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

Black Friday started in physical shops in the United States and Cyber Monday was invented in 2005 for the Monday afterwards, when people went back to work and shopped online. For a webshop the difference is now mostly a matter of timing rather than channel.
