TL;DR

  • New Year’s Eve does not need a new outfit, it needs a working layer. You sit indoors too warm and stand outside at midnight in the cold, and that is the only real problem of the evening.
  • This is the first Dutch New Year without consumer fireworks. The national ban came into force on 1 August 2026, so everybody is standing outside differently this time.
  • The system that solves it has three parts: a 250gsm tee as the base, a 440gsm sweater as the mid layer, and a coat over it.
  • The base layer matters most, because it is what you are left standing in when the sweater comes off indoors. A thin summer tee cannot do that job.
  • Buying something new for one evening is the standard mistake. What you need is a layer you already wear the rest of the winter.
  • Around 20 December the same question arrives every year, and the answer has not changed: dress for standing still outside for half an hour.

At midnight you are standing outside. That is the whole brief.

New Year’s Eve does not need a new outfit, it needs a working layer. You sit indoors too warm and stand outside at midnight in the cold, and that is the only real problem of the evening. A heavyweight tee with a 440gsm sweater over it solves it. In the Netherlands this is also the first New Year without consumer fireworks, so you will be standing still outside for longer.

The same question arrives around 20 December every year: what to wear for New Year. And it gets the same wrong answer: buy something new.

You already own the outfit. What you probably do not own is the right mid layer.

What New Year actually demands of your clothes

No New Year article starts here, and it is the only part that matters.

You spend hours indoors, in somebody’s house, heating on, too many bodies in one room. Then at quarter to twelve everybody goes outside and you stand still for half an hour in a Dutch December night. Then back in.

That is a swing of fifteen degrees or more, twice in one evening, and you are standing still in both halves. Standing still is the detail that decides it. Walking, you are almost never cold. Standing, you are cold inside ten minutes.

A shirt solves none of that. Neither does a thick jumper you have to take off indoors, because then you are holding a jumper in a crowded kitchen for four hours.

This year everybody is standing differently

For the first time, the Dutch New Year runs without consumer fireworks. The national ban came into force on 1 August 2026, which makes this the first New Year it applies to.

Practically, that changes your evening more than it sounds. Without your own fireworks you are not spending two minutes lighting something and running back inside. You are standing still and watching, for longer, at an organised display or just at the sky.

Standing still in the cold is exactly the scenario where a thin layer lets you down. The argument for weight gets stronger this year, not weaker.

Why New Year does not need a new shirt

We do not make shirts and we are not about to recommend one, so this is not a sales pitch: for most men a shirt is the wrong call on this particular evening.

It is a thin layer that works indoors and does nothing outdoors, so you end up dependent on your coat. And because you chose it as the smart option, you will not put a sweater over it, since then nobody sees the shirt.

That is the whole mistake of the night: dressing for how you look indoors, when the problem is outside.

The three-layer system, applied to one evening

Layering a tee and sweater for New Year's Eve
Off indoors, on outdoors. That is the entire system.

Base: a heavyweight tee at 250gsm. This is what you are left standing in when the sweater comes off indoors. A thin summer tee cannot do that job, because it is not something you want to be seen in on its own.

Mid: a 440gsm sweater. The layer doing the work. Off indoors, on outdoors, and heavy enough to cover half an hour of standing still.

Outer: your coat, or a zip hoodie if it stays above about two degrees. Nothing more than that.

Why this beats three thin layers is set out in the sweater versus longsleeve piece. Short version: warmth comes from trapped air, and a second thin layer compresses the first.

Three combinations that survive New Year

Three New Year's Eve combinations for men
Three combinations, all from a normal wardrobe.

1. The invisible one. Signature Sweater in Jet Black over a heavyweight tee. Plain, 440gsm, ribbed collar. Nobody comments on it and you are comfortable all night. This is the answer if you do not want to think about it.

2. The slightly less invisible one. Sinner & Saint Sweater in Off-White, carrying Oscar Wilde’s line about every saint having a past and every sinner having a future. Off-white in a room full of black works, and it is a line that lands better on the last evening of the year than on a Tuesday in March.

3. The one with texture. The Script Tee in Jet Black under The Wave Sweater. Chenille embroidery catches light from one angle and disappears from another, and in a room lit by candles and lamps that is the only kind of detail you actually see. Photographs never do it justice. In person they do.

What not to do

  • Do not wear something for the first time. New clothing itches, pulls or transfers dye at the worst possible moment, and you find out exactly when you can no longer do anything about it.
  • Do not dress for indoors. At midnight you are outside. Every year. It is the one certainty of the evening.
  • Do not stack four thin layers. Warmer on paper, colder in practice.
  • Do not wear white. Oliebollen, icing sugar, and somebody holding a glass in a crowded room.

If you are still ordering something

Do not order on 30 December. Between Christmas and New Year every carrier runs on reduced capacity with fewer delivery days, and that is the week parcels sit still.

Our normal delivery times are next business day in the Netherlands when you order before 22:30, but allow more in that week. If you want to wear it on the 31st, order by around the 27th.

What is reduced sits on the sale page, and the rest is in the shop.

And the day after

On 1 January something else starts: the January sale. That is the month where discounts go deeper than Black Friday, because shops are clearing winter stock rather than running a promotion.

If you are planning to sort out your wardrobe in the new year, do not start by buying. Start with the winter wardrobe check. Most men find they own plenty and are missing one layer.

Frequently asked questions

What should men wear on New Year’s Eve?

A heavyweight tee with a 440gsm sweater over it, and your coat for outside. The problem is not how you look, it is that you sit too warm indoors and stand still in the cold at midnight.

Is a shirt a good choice for New Year’s Eve?

For most men, no. It works indoors and does nothing outdoors, and because you picked it as the smart option you will not layer anything warm over it.

How do I dress for standing outside at midnight?

Plan for half an hour of standing still. You cool down far faster standing than walking, so you need weight in the mid layer rather than more thin layers.

Does the fireworks ban change what to wear?

Indirectly, yes. Without your own fireworks you stand and watch for longer instead of moving around, which makes a heavy mid layer more useful.

When should I order to have it by 31 December?

By around 27 December. In the week between Christmas and New Year there are fewer delivery days and carriers run on reduced capacity.

What colour should I wear?

Whatever you already wear. Avoid white, because oliebollen and icing sugar in a crowded room end predictably.
